Unlikely. The World of Collectives

The duo Cooke-Sasseville, the foursome Delabela, and the duo formed by artists Julie Dallaire and Edith Normandeau make works that exaggeratedly appropriate the images, objects, and constructions of the advertising and mass-entertainment worlds. Addressing creative production in collectives in this case, curator Mélanie Boucher also reveals the causes, consequences, and intentions linked to this appropriation.

Opening on November16, 2002 at 3 pm.

Trans/mission

The theme of agri-food is central to the photographic installations presented by Ontario artist Ron Benner at EXPRESSION. Through his focus on food, its distribution, and the transactions to which it is subjected, the artist draws our attention to his historical, cultural, and identitary concerns.

Opening on January 18, 2003 at 3 pm.
Presentation by Ron Benner on January 18, at 2 pm.

Réflexion

With Réflexion, Céline Messier casts a poetic eye on a sofa draped with a white veil. Capturing the finest modulations of the light, the artist’s photographs are installed in the space to establish a dialogue with EXPRESSION’s gallery.

Vernissage on March 1, 2003 at 3 pm.

Transaction

The Vancouver artist Alan Storey presents simultaneously, at EXPRESSION and at Centre d’exposition Circa (Montreal), a new, synchronic, and interactive work. In Transaction, an activity conducted by a visitor to one of the two galleries causes a reaction in the other, establishing a dialogue between EXPRESSION and the Centre d’exposition Circa. Storey’s work, highlighted by curator Petra Watson, reveals in a unique way the geographic space separating the two galleries.

Vernissage on April 12, 2003 from 2 pm to 6 pm (EXPRESSION and Centre d’exposition Circa).

Computer graphic art created at Atelier d’estampe Sagamie

In the area of computer-graphic art – that is, creation of computer-assisted images – Atelier d’estampe Sagamie has been recognized in Quebec for a number of years. Because many artists from Quebec and elsewhere have had residencies there, EXPRESSION now presents the results of work associated primarily with digital capture of the image, its manipulation with a computer, and large-format printing with inkjet printer. In this exhibition are works produced by about ten artists at Atelier d’estampe Sagamie, and selected by EXPRESSION.

Vernissage on May 31, 2003 at 3 pm.

ORANGE, Contemporary Art Event of Saint-Hyacinthe

Speakers
Ron Benner, Dario Corbeira, Barbara Fischer, Massimo Guerrera, André-Louis Paré et Jean-Philippe Uzel

Agriculture and agribusiness operations dominate the Saint-Hyacinthe region, from crop and livestock raising and processing to food distribution. This reality, and the highly topical issues that it provokes, have fired the creativity of many artists. Which, in turn, has prompted EXPRESSIONto present ORANGE, Contemporary-Art Event of Saint-Hyacinthe.

The inaugural edition of ORANGE features works by 18 artists from Quebec and elsewhere in Canada and from abroad, all of whom have developed one aspect or another of the agri-food chain in their art. They have been invited by the curators to display their creations in public spaces and vacant buildings in downtown Saint-Hyacinthe and the surrounding area. The event also includes site-specific installations, mobile works and an exhibition at EXPRESSION. Throughout the event, artists and various experts will deliver talks on art and agri-food questions. Subsequently, these lectures will be grouped together and published. The main program will be complemented by a wide range of sidebar activities that go beyond the visual arts.

Opening night on August 28, 2003 at 7 pm.
Presentations on September 27 and 28, 2003.

ORANGE is a contemporary art event produced by EXPRESSION.
