L’Art c’est faire du bruit en silence

Cozic was born into the visual arts world in the 1960s of the combined work of Monic Brassard and Yvon Cozic. This duo of Quebec artists brings viewers into contact with art in a playful and participative manner. For more than thirty years, Cozic’s dedication to a greater “socialisation” of materials and its empathetic attention to forms have enabled it to define the outlines of a singular body of work, in which the art object becomes a relay to domestic objects. Drawing its motifs from everyday sources, Cozic creates artistic interventions which join humour and poetry. For EXPRESSION, the artists propose to decode the colour of words in order to bring out the “graphic-phonic” connections between the drawings and objects on exhibit, using an alphabet called the Couronne (Crown). Only by examining the Décodeur (Decoder) can visitors read the chromatic circles presented. Cozic’s exhibition, L’Art, c’est faire du bruit en silence, is accompanied by a publication that includes an essay by Marie-Eve Beaupré.

Beside Myself / Hors de moi

A Montreal artist originally from Santa Monica, California, Daniel Olson has been working in the field for more than twenty years. His work, which takes many forms, pays special attention to the artist’s role in his work, thereby expressing a desire to join life and art but also examining the concept of identity, which is altered by our ties to others. Daniel Olson’s project brings his world into relation with a visual culture that draws mainly on literature and film. Out of this relation arises a series of objects and experiences of every description in which the pleasure of words, word play and the creative process colors his aesthetic. The exhibition at EXPRESSION, organized by the curator André-Louis Paré, is a retrospective look designed as an opening onto the present using a selection of works produced since 1990. The exhibition is accompanied by a publication.

Opening on November 1st, 2008 at 3:00 PM.
Presentation by Daniel Olson and André-Louis Paré on November 12 at 7:00 PM.

Des instants entre parenthèses

Eveline Boulva and Sophie Privé, two young artists originally from Quebec City, have a shared interest in the representation of temporality in painting. For Boulva, this interest takes the form of landscapes as forms of subjective perception, while Privé works with the poetry of everyday life through portraiture. While the content of their work differs, their creative process has many similarities. For these two artists, creating images derives in many cases from their use of digital photography and drawing. Through this procedure, Boulva and Privé express a moment, a certain element, accentuating the linearity of the drawing and the idea of narrative in the work. For EXPRESSION, the two artists will create an exhibition out of a dialogue between their respective projects using new and recent work.

Presentation by Eveline Boulva and Sophie Privé on January 24, 2009 at 2 pm.

Inférences narratives

A Canadian artist born in Rotterdam, Wyn Geleynse has stood out for more than twenty-five years for his use of film and video images in installations, sometimes even incorporating photographic images. His stagings of images are constructed around the concept of memory without, however, making it entirely possible to grasp their content. The short fictional stories he creates can only leave the viewer asking for more in the face of their lack of narrative completion. The exhibition Inférences narratives, organised by the curator Sylvain Campeau, nevertheless reveals a new aesthetic approach in the artist’s work. The installation aspect has been eclipsed somewhat, giving rise to projections of more imposing dimensions. Taking over EXPRESSION’s space with his video works, Wyn Geleynse proposes an encounter between still and moving images while at the same time creating an impression of narrative generated by the subtlety of his montage.

Mes châteaux d’air / Monts et merveilles

Catherine Bolduc is a Montreal artist who creates work which conveys the fantastic and marvellous world of childhood, re-interpreting it in many ways: through drawing, sculpture, installation and video. For the past several years, she has been re-directing the viewer’s gaze by blinding it with light and plunging it into a world of illusions, or by dazing it. Through these varied visual strategies, Bolduc invites viewers to take part in the pleasure of dreams and a lack of restraint, in the joy of anticipation, in experiencing strangeness. The exhibition Monts et merveilles, organised by the curator Geneviève Goyer-Ouimette, is an enormous installation bringing together work from the past ten years, through which the visitor is invited to penetrate the artist’s personal and singular world.
