Women With Kitchen Appliances is
a female collective whose performances play on the sounds of cooking tools and
items. Long relegated to the feminine world of domesticity, the culinary
objects are diverted from their original functions and recycled as (gratingly)
musical instruments. The artists create vibrant environments and symphonies
with rubber gloves, small appliances and a panoply of kitchen implements. Since
forming the collective in 1999, they have taken their blend of mirth and kitsch
to stages and galleries, but also to tents, lofts and private apartments, in
Montréal, Toronto, Ottawa, New York and Brussels. At ORANGE, WWKA is putting on several
sonic performances.
